The Bengals played in the American Football League in 1968-69 before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Cincinnati reached Super Bowl XVI in 1982 and Super Bowl XXIII in 1989, losing to the San Francisco 49ers on both occasions. Prior to last season, the Bengals won just 19 games in five seasons and were perennial cellar dwellers. However, 2003 saw a marked improvement and the Cincinnati Bengals are a team on the rise who should challenge for a playoff spot in 2004. The Bengals are 5-6, and their slimmest of playoff hopes could get a boost with a victory Sunday at Baltimore where their season fell apart last season with a Game 13 loss.

 

If you love an underdog, the Bengals are the team for you, having not reached the playoffs since the 1990 season. The Cincinnati Bengals were once affectionately referred to as "The Bungles" due to their inept performances on the field.
