The City of Detroit welcomed the Lions in
1934 after the franchise was purchased for $7,952- by a group
headed by a local Detroit radio executive, George A. Richards.
Playing in the University of Detroit Stadium before average
crowds of 16,000 people, the new Detroit Lions won the
NFL Championship in only their second year (1935).
The Detroit Lions dominated the NFL in
the 1950's with four division titles and three league
championships. Detroit Lions' players like Bobby Layne and Dick "Night Train"
Lane became household names. |
