The club began life as the Dallas Texans in 1960
before becoming the Kansas City
Chiefs in 1963. Under the guidance of
head coach Hank Stram, the Chiefs won their one and
only Super Bowl in 1970 when they defeated the
Minnesota Vikings. In
1971, Stram led the Chiefs
to the AFC Western Division title in their second
year in the league. That year, in a double-overtime
divisional playoff game on Christmas Day, the Miami
Dolphins defeated Kansas City
Chiefs in the longest game in NFL
history.
Kansas City Chiefs rode a high-powered offense into the
playoffs for the first time since the 1997 campaign
in 2003, but they were at
one point considered Super Bowl favorites so a
second round exit at home to Indianapolis was a
disappointment. Although the
Chiefs were off to a good start, the 2004 season was a losing battles as the
Chiefs dropped
further and further out of playoff contention.
