The
Minnesota Vikings were formed in 1960
and began playing in the NFL a year later. The club’s best, and
ultimately most frustrating, years came in the 1970s when they
were led by a strong defense known as
the ‘Purple People Eaters’ and appeared in four Super Bowls
(IV, VIII, IX, and XI) in eight
seasons. The Vikings lost on each occasion and joined
the Buffalo Bills with a league-worst 0-4 record in the big
game. Minnesota have not returned to the Super Bowl since 1977
but came close in 1988 and 1999 when they were losing
semi-finalists.
The Vikings registered
nine wins in 2003, but missed out on
the playoffs after a poor finish followed a strong start. |
